Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi on Thursday, March 20, defended First Lady Rachel Ruto against criticism over her attire.

In a statement on X, Havi addressed the ongoing online debate surrounding the First Lady’s outfit during a state banquet held in honor of Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.

“Let the First Lady be herself. She is a dignified, modest, and graceful woman. Instead of fixating on her, focus on your own spouses—or on yourself if you’re a woman,” Havi posted.

Although the event on Wednesday, March 18, was a formal diplomatic gathering, Rachel Ruto's outfit caught the attention of many Kenyans. Social media users actively discussed her attire, which stood out during the high-profile occasion.

The First Lady opted for a long black dress featuring intricate fringed embroidery and long sleeves.

She complemented the outfit with a classic white pearl necklace and stylish black heels accented with silver. To complete the ensemble, she carried a sleek black clutch bag.

Images and videos from the event quickly made their way online, sparking varied reactions.

While some admired her elegant and sophisticated appearance, others engaged in discussions about whether the choice of attire was suitable for the occasion.

Many observers felt that the First Lady’s choice of attire was more suited to a solemn occasion than the elegance expected at a state banquet.

“The Kenyan First Lady’s outfit feels more like Sunday church attire than the refined glamour of a state function,” one X user remarked. Another highlighted the significance of fashion in diplomacy, stating, “Dress is a statement.”

Her outfit sparked further discussion, prompting a media outlet to delve into her overall fashion choices.

The article explored her preference for kitenge dresses, noting that fashion critics remained divided on whether they were appropriate for high-profile state events.

Critics argued that while cultural representation is important, the First Lady’s wardrobe should also align with the sophistication expected in diplomatic setups.
